The SoTL Lit Review, The SoTL Librarian

Last week, Margy MacMillan led a two-hour workshop on the SoTL lit review here at the University of Calgary’s Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. Margy is professor and instruction librarian at Mount Royal University, just across the Bow River. In the world of the scholarship of teaching and learning, Margy is a powerful presence behind the scenes as undoubtedly the most active librarian in the international SoTL community. She calls herself an “information hummingbird,” taking information from one place and distributing it more broadly.

New Leadership and New Directions for Student Engagement SIG

The New Year marks some large changes for the Special Interest Group on Student Engagement (SIGSE). This year, the objective of the group is to find new ways to empower students in research and increase student ownership. The present leadership of the group exemplifies this; the SIG is chaired by Sam Dvorakova, an undergraduate student, and supported by two co-chairs, Miriam Carey and Paul Taylor, both respected faculty in the field. Through the new leadership, we have become one of the first groups in ISSOTL to not only include students in our midst, but to support students in taking executive positions and shaping the group.

Conference on Excellent Practices in Mentoring Undergraduate Research

Registration is now open for the July 24th-25th Conference on Excellent Practices in Mentoring Undergraduate Research, hosted by The Center for Engaged Learning at Elon University. More information about the conference can be found at the conference website.  The conference features keynotes by George Kuh (Ensuring Quality & Taking High-Impact Practices to Scale) and W. Brad Johnson (On Being a Mentor: A Guide for Faculty in Higher Education), multi-institutional research conducted through the 2014-2016 Center for Engaged Learning Research Seminar on Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research, and related research by other scholars.

Invitation to Participate in Multi-Disciplinary SOTL Study

Dear SOTL colleagues:

We are writing to invite you to participate in a multi‐disciplinary Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) project investigating how graduate students’ participation in a graduate pedagogy course influences their development as teacher‐scholars. Our Indiana University investigator team is Valerie O’Loughlin (Medical Sciences), Jennifer Meta Robinson (Anthropology), Catherine Sherwood‐Laughlin (Applied Health Science), and Katherine Kearns (Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning). This project was reviewed and granted exempt status by the IU Institutional Review Board (IU IRB # 150357724).

ISSOTL Elections - Spring 2016

Call for Chapter Proposals for Applying the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Beyond the Individual Classroom Level

We are seeking brief chapter proposals for editorial review and possible inclusion in this volume. The purpose of this book is to share with others in higher education examples of applying scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) results to teaching and student learning beyond the individual classroom level. The focus is on the use of SoTL--practitioner, action reflection/research (usually on the researchers’ own students and/or students in their discipline at a local level)--and its application at the multi-section course, program, department, college, co-curricular, institutional, or disciplinary level(s). The SoTL results or implications applied could be from the author’s own SoTL project(s) and/or from application of a synthesis of others’ SoTL work on a given topic or in the discipline.
