Interest Groups are listed alphabetically. ISSOTL Members can join the following interest groups when they join or renew their membership.

Advancing Undergraduate Research The ISSOTL Interest Group on Advancing Undergraduate Research (AUR-IG) is an international, interdisciplinary network for faculty and administrators who are interested in investigating undergraduate research through the lens of the scholarship of teaching and learning. We strive to help institutions define undergraduate research and develop assessments to evaluate student learning through research and scholarship across disciplines and individual institutions. We encourage collaborations among interest group members, particularly projects that promote scholarly research on student learning through undergraduate research. We also share resources, disseminate findings, and provide support for institutions to carry out best practices in undergraduate research. To learn more, please contact Trent Maurer at

Arts and Humanities If you are a teacher-scholar in the disciplines of the humanities (literature, philosophy, classics, religion, history, languages, et al) seeking a sense of community within ISSOTL, please join us. Decoding the Disciplines Since its inception in the late 1990s the Decoding the Disciplines approach has been used by instructors, faculty developers, and educational researchers in at least nine countries as a means of increasing student learning and as a framework for research in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Beginning with a focus on specific bottlenecks to learning, practitioners of Decoding conduct systematic analysis of the kinds of mental operations that students must master to overcome these obstacles, model and provide practice of these skills, deal with emotional resistance to learning, and assess the results. General Education Are you someone who is involved in planning, teaching, or assessing curricula for your institution’s general education program or core curriculum?  Are you responsible for the development of faculty/staff instructors? To better advance SoTL within institutions and across higher education, SoTL in general education programs must be explored further.  We are seeking members interested in exploring the role of SoTL in general education and core curricula. National Teaching Fellows & Institutional Teaching Award Winners Are you a national teaching fellow or an institutional teaching award winner interested to exchange experiences and explore collaborative scholarship opportunities with international colleagues pertaining to issues of innovative educational leadership, curriculum, teaching and/or learning practices in high education? If so, please feel welcome to join members of this ISSOTL Interest Group. Although this interest group will take up matters of importance to national and institutional award winners, all ISSOTL members are welcome to join this group (per the ISSOTL interest group inclusiveness policy). Pedagogy and Research for Online and Blending Teaching and Learning This interest group represents an international, interdisciplinary network of teachers and scholars committed to discussion, inquiry, and collaboration to explore fully the trends, potential, and challenges within online and hybrid teaching and learning.  This group emphasizes: current tendencies and research in online education; effective tools for online education that combine strong teaching with appropriate technologies; collaboration on research projects; and sharing of ideas for new ways to design and deliver web-based instruction that meets the expectations of students and provide substantive academic experiences.  For more information, please contact John Huss,

Students as Co-Inquirers Are you a faculty/ staff member who is interested in partnering with students on SOTL inquiry projects? Then join us in creating a cross-disciplinary, international community of SOTL scholars dedicated to tapping into students’ expertise on teaching and learning, sharing promising practices for co-inquiry with students, exploring the many positive outcomes of this work and amplifying student voices within the international society. Student Engagement This ISSOTL Interest Group on Student Engagement serves as an international, interdisciplinary network for ISSOTL members who are committed to pursuing SoTL projects on the topic of student engagement. Members Seeking Members to Form ISSOTL Interest Groups

The following are calls from ISSOTL members seeking enough founding members to form Interest Groups. Contact the organizer to join the group. To propose a new Interest Group, send your application to the Secretary of the Society. The ISSOTL Board of Directors welcomes applications for Interest Groups of ISSOTL members and External Affiliates. ISSOTL Policy Statement: Internal Interest Groups and External Affiliates

Goals: To create flexible, minimum guidelines that enable groups of ISSOTL members and related external groups to:

  • have formal relationships with ISSOTL
  • accomplish meaningful initiatives together
  • share scholarship and learning across a broad network
  • establish connections and conversations around the world
  • provide to newcomers ways into the society
  • support the organization of scholarship projects and other activities

Interest Groups This status applies to groups of ISSOTL members who wish to be recognized within ISSOTL. Such groups are organized around shared interests such as discipline, pedagogy under study, nationality, region of residence, educational status, and institutional type. The Society particularly encourages Interest Groups with international membership and non-traditional groupings based on research interests. Interest Groups must maintain a minimum of ten ISSOTL members in good standing. Interest Groups offer their members the opportunity to exchange information and ideas on specific topics related to scholarship of teaching and learning. Interest Groups may propose symposia, forums, workshops, or special events at the annual conference. Among other activities, they may contribute articles to the ISSOTL newsletter and propose position and policy statements for consideration by the Board of Directors. Interest Groups must be approved by a subset of the membership committee, and renewed annually by the Board of Directors, based on a written application that:

  • provides the mission statement for the Interest Group
  • describes how its mission is compatible with ISSOTL's goals
  • lists a minimum of ten ISSOTL members in good standing who are committed to becoming members of the Interest Group
  • provides a key person, and his or her contact information, who will email an annual report of the Interest Group's activities to the President at least fifteen days prior to the Board of Directors meeting at the annual face-to-face conference each year

Affiliate Groups This status applies to organizations and groups that exist primarily external to ISSOTL. Examples include disciplinary societies, project-based collaborations, and educational institutions. While such organizations and groups are considered affiliate members of ISSOTL, their members do not become members of ISSOTL automatically. Rather, each individual must join ISSOTL to be considered among the Society's members and to receive discounts and other benefits. Affiliation must be approved by a subset of the membership committee, and renewed annually by the Board of Directors, based on a written application from the external group that describes:

  • the goals and expected outcomes of the affiliation
  • the mutual benefits of the affiliation
  • the time frame of the affiliation
  • the obligations of ISSOTL and the affiliate organization
  • any resources needed (including funds and staff) and how they will be obtained
