Interest Group Mission Statement

The ISSoTL Interest Group on Student Engagement serves as an international, interdisciplinary network for ISSoTL members who are committed to pursuing studies on the topic of student engagement.  Its mission is to create opportunities for dialogue, encourage activities that promote scholarly research on the topic, to support active engagement for students with conference activities, and provide connect to ISSoTL members interested in student engagement.  The ISSoTL Interest Group on Student Engagement exists as a network of scholars to promote and develop collaborative projects.

The mission of the ISSoTL Interest Group on Student Engagement is compatible with the goals of ISSoTL, particularly the following two organizational objectives: to “promote cross-disciplinary conversation to create synergy” and to “facilitate the collaboration of scholars in different countries and the flow of new findings and applications across national boundaries.” The Interest Group works with the ISSoTL Board of Directors and Committees to help pursue these goals.

To fulfill its mission, the ISSoTL Interest Group on Student Engagement will organize and offer a variety of activities, including but not limited to:

1)         holding meetings at ISSoTL conferences;

2)         advocating for and facilitating active student engagement at ISSoTL conferences;

2)         proposing and forming special sessions and symposia at ISSoTL conferences;

3)         encouraging connectivity among members between ISSoTL conferences;

4)         providing updates and postings via the ISSoTL communication channels (e.g, newsletter); and

5)         identifying, developing, and creating opportunities for publishing on the topic.

2018 Activities

The 2018 leadership team is committed to the above aims, with a specific focus on advocating for and facilitating active student engagement at ISSoTL conferences, and encouraging connectivity among members between ISSoTL conferences. Key activities for 2018 will be to:

  • Promote and raise visibility of student roles, work, and activities in the society

  • Create more explicit spaces and opportunities for students to take an active role in the society

  • Develop and implement a ‘new-to-ISSoTL’ buddy system for the 2018 conference

  • Disseminate resources and facilitate dialogue around international student engagement activities and work through multiple communication platforms including, but not limited to, Twitter, the ISSoTL newsletter, the SIGSE Listserv, and the ISSoTL website.

    • E.g.,  a “students in the spotlight” feature in the monthly newsletter

History of SIGSE

Back in 2008, Chris Garrett took the initiative to organize and convene the first ISSOTL special interest group, a group of scholars interested in the topic of student engagement. They held special sessions at ISSOTL conferences, around the mission statement below.

The current leadership team, as of 2018, is comprised of three co-chairs: Rachel Guitman, McMaster University (Undergraduate Student, Canada); Christopher Ostrowski, University of Calgary (Postgraduate Student, Canada); and Lucy Mercer-Mapstone, University of Edinburgh (Postdoctoral Researcher, Scotland).
